I never introduce a new treatment to our menu at MG Beauty and Brow until I have tested it on myself first. Before we bring anything new into the salon, I always make sure I’m the first one in the chair. Last week we started testing out the new Dermalogica skin needling pen and the Exo Booster serum and so of course I had to be the model.
I have always felt that you can’t really understand a treatment just by reading a manual or sitting through a training seminar. You have to actually experience it yourself. And for me, lying on the bed and feeling the treatment firsthand is the only way to truly know what it’s like. I want to know exactly how the depth adjustments feel on different areas of the face, how the serum feels on the skin, and what the healing process looks like over the next seven days at home.
When a client comes in and feels a little nervous about trying something new, I want to be able to talk them through it with total honesty. Our clients trust us with their skin and their confidence, and the best way to look after that trust is by speaking from personal experience.
Moving Beyond the Training Manuals
When you run a professional salon, you get invited to a lot of brand launches and advanced training days. You get beautiful booklets, scientific slide decks, and demonstrations on skin models. While all of that clinical theory is incredibly important, it only tells you half the story.
Reading that a needle cartridge moves at a certain speed is completely different from actually feeling those micro-needles touch your own skin. By being the model myself, I get to understand the real sensory details. I learn exactly what the vibrations feel like around more sensitive areas like the forehead or just near the nose. I can feel the difference when we adjust the depth settings to suit different zones of the face. This hands-on knowledge means that when my team performs the treatment on a client, we aren’t just following a checklist, we are working with physical awareness of what the client is experiencing in that exact second.
The New Dermalogica Pen and Exo Booster
Our recent session with the new Dermalogica skin needling device was the perfect example of why this process is so necessary. Skin needling is an incredible treatment for boosting collagen, smoothing out skin texture, and helping with fine lines and it can sound a bit daunting to someone who hasn’t tried it before.
During the treatment, we paired the pen with the new Exo Booster serum. Feeling how the serum immediately worked to calm the skin mid-treatment. What I love most about this addition is that it isn’t just a salon-only product. It is a treatment you take home to continue using for up to seven days afterwards. By testing it myself, I can monitor the day-by-day healing process at home. I can see exactly how the skin changes on day two, day four, and day seven, which means I can give my clients realistic, honest expectations for their own post-treatment journey.
Looking After Your Trust
When a client walks through the doors of MG Beauty and Brow, they aren’t just booking a standard skin service. They are investing their time, their money, and their trust in us. Skin concerns can make us feel a bit vulnerable, and trying an advanced treatment for the first time takes a bit of bravery.
If a client asks me, “Is it going to hurt?” or “What will I look like tomorrow?”, I never want to give a scripted textbook answer. I want to look them in the eye and say, “I did this last Tuesday, and this is exactly how it felt for me.” Speaking from personal experience allows us to calm those nerves and build a beautiful, honest relationship with everyone who sits in our chairs.
Looking after your trust will always be the most important part of what we do. Testing every pen, serum, and technique on myself first is just one of the ways we make sure we are always delivering the highest quality care possible.
If you are a fellow business owner or service provider, do you find yourself testing everything out first too? I would love to know how you stay connected to what your clients experience. And if you’ve been thinking about trying skin needling yourself, please come into the salon for a chat. I would love to share my personal experience with you and see if it’s the right fit for your skin goals.
